The Pipeline: What's Opening Next

Our research desk is tracking 636 new pre-opening restaurant leads published since October 1. Here are six openings suppliers should have on their radar:

  • Jim 'N Nick's Community Bar-B-Q — High Point, NC, with a grand opening set for Nov. 4.
  • Miznon — a new kosher location at American Dream in East Rutherford, NJ, targeting November.
  • Peach Valley Cafe — Southern-style breakfast and lunch coming to Ocala, FL, also in November.
  • Lazy Dog — King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania, expected by the end of 2026.
  • Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. — its first location south of San Antonio, on South Padre Island, TX, slated for January 2027.
  • Kura Revolving Sushi — Oxnard, CA, with an estimated opening in March 2027.
💡
Why it matters for suppliers: Every one of these openings needs a POS system, kitchen equipment, furniture, signage, insurance, and staffing before day one — and we already have verified contact info for the decision-makers behind each one. Email Patrick@RestaurantActivityReport.com for the contact list in your territory.

Diners are pulling back, and chains are shrinking to match. Restaurants Canada says 80% of Canadians are eating out less because of the cost of living, up from 75% a year earlier, with the restraint most noticeable among households earning $100,000 or more. MTY plans to close 68 corporate restaurants, Starbucks announced about 250 North American closures, and Canadian restaurant prices rose 3.1% year over year in August. (Retail Insider)

💡
Why it matters for suppliers: Fewer visits per customer means operators scrutinize every purchase, so suppliers who can show a clear cost savings or traffic lift will win the meetings. Closures also put used kitchen equipment and furniture on the secondary market.

Market Signals

Wendy's and Dine Brands are showing financial strain, while Domino's looks steadier. Wendy's second-quarter U.S. same-restaurant sales fell 7% with traffic down 12.5%, and it withdrew full-year guidance. Dine Brands, parent of Applebee's and IHOP, now pays out about 123% of trailing earnings after cutting its dividend 62.7%. Domino's dividend appears sound despite a weak stock. (24/7 Wall St.)

💡
Why it matters for suppliers: Brands under pressure delay capital projects and stretch payment terms, so expect longer sales cycles and check your credit exposure on accounts tied to these systems.

Labor & Costs

Seattle's minimum wage is set to reach $22.14 in 2027. The city's Office of Labor Standards announced the new rate, up from $9.47 when the law took effect in 2015. A survey cited by the outlet, which is run by a group that opposes wage increases, found 71% of respondents saw fewer customers, and the Washington Hospitality Association warns the state is on track to lose about 9% of its restaurants. 💡
Why it matters for suppliers: When wage floors jump, operators look for labor-saving tools and tighter purchasing. Pitch scheduling, ordering, and automation products on payback measured in labor hours saved.

Technology & Innovation

Toast is rolling out AI agents for scheduling, SEO, reviews, and offers. Its new scheduling agent builds a labor schedule from availability, expected sales, and overtime risk, and Toast says beta users averaged 41% fewer overtime hours per employee. Toast IQ Team starts at $60 a month plus $9 per employee, and the Grow marketing tier starts at $699 a month. Early access also covers menu and phone-answering agents. (Nation's Restaurant News)

💡
Why it matters for suppliers: POS platforms are becoming the AI layer operators buy through. If you sell adjacent software or services, plan for how you will integrate with, or compete against, these built-in agents.

Breaking News

True Food Kitchen filed for Chapter 11 and closed 12 restaurants. The chain filed on October 4, closing locations including Century City, Miami, Chicago, and Bethesda, and it has 34 restaurants still open in 14 states while it seeks a buyer. It reported about $1.6 million in cash against $42.1 million of funded debt, with a commitment for roughly $20 million in financing subject to court approval. (Fox Business)

💡
Why it matters for suppliers: Open invoices with True Food Kitchen are now claims in a bankruptcy case, so review your exposure now. Expect used kitchen equipment and furniture from the 12 closed sites to reach the secondary market.
